Pre- or Post- SYMPOSIUM TOURS

Both tours will be carried out either on May 31 or June 6, 2013, according to the expressed interest and includes a passage through the famous “Samaria Gorge”.

The tour begins by bus from your hotel up to the entrance of Gorge, which is located 4 km south of the Plain of Omalos, 42km from Chania. The entrance of the Gorge is called Xyloskalo (wooden stairs). Of this point the walk begins. The distance from Xyloskalo onto the floor of the gorge is about 18km. Approximately in the middle of the path the ruined village of Samaria, appears. Here you will find a small station that is equipped with telephone, first emergency aid and toilets with running water. Here, there is also possibility, for whoever wants, to rent a mule for the remainder of the journey. More after you reach Sidiroportes (Iron doors). It is the narrowest part of the gorge, that rises to a height of 300 meters but only about three meters wide. This brings you to the mouth of the gorge, which is on the shores of the Libyan Sea, at the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli (Santa Roumeli).

It takes 7-8 hours to walk through and it is essential for you to have the correct footwear as it is rocky in some places. However, the ever changing view and the wonderful scents of pinewood and Cretan herbs make the walk pleasant and the effort worthwhile.

From Agia Roumeli you will be transported by boat to Chora Sfakion, where a bus will wait to return you back to hotel.
